TikTok Grants Users Control to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Their Feeds

The platform is rolling out a fresh option that permits them to lessen the volume of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform revealed that it now features over 1 billion content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

This change is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a global launch. This development comes amid a surge in AI content, spurred by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly a tenth of the quickest rising content creators on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a label for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is typically absurd or bizarre.

Our research shows that a lot of users appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we want to provide users the ability to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok disclosed that there are currently over a billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. Overall, more than 100 million pieces of content are uploaded to the app every day, making AI content a limited portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be in a position to decrease or raise the amount of AI-generated videos they watch by opening the content preference setting in the app and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the filter include politics, clothing, beauty, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s rules mandate content makers to tag “realistic” artificially created content, and it prohibits dangerous fake videos of celebrities or emergencies. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.

Additionally, the app will henceforth attach an “AI-made” watermark to content created with its built-in AI features, or identified by an collaborative effort for recognizing AI-generated material. This action is aimed to stop users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also introducing a $2 million educational fund for professionals and groups to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will support educational bodies dedicated to teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has supported its safety measures, during debate over proposals to lay off a large number of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is set to cut hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals raising concerns that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would still have a role, but automated tools can safeguard staff by filtering out the most harmful content ahead of it is viewed by staff. The platform reported a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.

It is vital to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
